Monthly Archives: May 2010
May Giveaway Day was a lot of fun. It was nice to have so many new visitors and to get so much positive feedback on what I deemed a rather imperfect craft.
It was also great to see what other people were giving away — some rather professional craftiness, some beautiful, beautiful fabrics that were super inspiring, very generous packages all around. It was also interesting to see how many bloggers have been collecting vintage sheets, chopping them into handy fat quarters. I love the look, am itching to make a vintage sheet summer blanket, and, even more than that, I love the widespread trend of giving these things new life, recycling into crafts.
Congratulations to Crunchy of Crunchy Sews (Crunch Crunch Crunch), the 75th commenter and winner of my little picnic roll. I’ll be getting in touch with Crunchy directly to coordinate the details. Thanks to everyone who commented. I hope those who didn’t win will find the time to make their own little picnic kits. If I can do it, you can do it! Plus, sewing is a good way to recover from the internet binge of the last couple of days, right? I’m counting on it.
SMS visitors, please note that the giveaway is the next post down…
It seems it’s been a year since I set to blathering about the greenmarket, little pieces of nature here in the city, things that heal my heart nestled in between the brick and mortar and concrete of this city.
Since that time, I’ve watched a lot of things I love about the city continue to blossom, and the title of this blog has felt like more of a misnomer as farming, DIY-ing, canning, fermentation, and similar activities have continued to tear along the path of returning to city life, folding into Brooklyn more and more, becoming truly urban pursuits. I still pine for big old open roads, for trees towering higher than buildings, but, a year on, I’m still so happy to be here on my block of brownstones, doing things I love to do, sharing them on this blog.
To celebrate the blog’s first birthday, please scroll down to yesterday’s Giveaway post to win a little something from me.
Or just enjoy these snapshots, taken on a recent Brooklyn stroll. These are some of the aforementioned heart-healing snippets, the bits of blue sky or gray, the green expanses that help the city breathe and me along with it.
Ha — in the last year, I have also stopped making Shawn take pictures of projects and have become handy with the camera myself, slightly obsessed.
Once again, it is Giveaway Day over at Sew, Mama, Sew. Check out their many links to generous people giving away neat things. And read on for my little gift to you.
A while back, I posted about making little cutlery roll-ups for some picnic-loving friends. Amusingly, these were the first thing I had ever quilted, I made up the pattern myself (having, of course, never quilted), and I now recognize many follies in the planning process. And so, nice readers, allow me to redeem myself.
I can’t promise that it will be perfect, but I can say that your cutlery roll will be slightly less bulky than those pictured below, and it will help remind you to tote your own knife and fork and spoon, create a little less waste, and, perhaps most importantly, it will make you picnic-ready as spring gives way to summer and all the lazy, blanketed, outdoor days that surely lie before you.
All you have to do to win your very own picnic roll and be super prepared for picnics, office lunches, etc., is leave a comment on this post. Please note that, in addition to being a bit more sleek and less puffy than the one above, yours will be made of different fabrics, so it will look a little different overall.
Be sure to include your email address in the appropriate field when you comment so I can let you know if you’ve won (you don’t have to put it in the body of the post), and comment by the end of the day on May 20. A winner will be chosen at random on May 21 and notified by email.
Don’t forget to visit Sew, Mama, Sew for your shot at many more fantastic goodies. Happy May Giveaway Day!
